When building or buying a home, there are plenty of things we choose to leave to the professionals. Here at Seal Smart, we are professionals. When it comes to the exterior of your home, we exist to make sure that it can withstand the elements and the test of time. With different materials, there are various methods of protection. They all stem from understanding the materials themselves.
One of the lesser understood materials is either concrete or masonry. Since it’s such a specialized field, most people opt to leave it to the concrete or masonry companies. However, have you ever wondered about some of the details of its preparation and protection?
At Seal Smart, it’s our job to know how it works to make sure it continues to do so. After all, concrete is quite literally the solid foundation of your patio or home’s exterior.
So how long does concrete or masonry last if it’s protected and laid appropriately? When high-quality materials are used and industry-standard procedures are adhered to, these materials can last up to 150 years. While some companies don’t perform to the highest standards, high-quality concrete, brick or stone have one of the longest lifespans of any other building material used. After all, there are many homes in the world that are hundreds of years old and made with sturdy masonry or brick.
We protect these materials by using a tried-and-true, seven-step process.
Our process includes cleaning all oil, grease, and other dirt from the surface. Next, we strip away any previous sealant or concrete from the surface and open up the pores with an etching solution.
The process is much more straightforward for any masonry because there is a textured surface that we don’t want to alter or damage on the brick or stone. Instead, we clean the brick and apply a simple sealant to the exterior. That’s it!
